As a reward for our baking and serving refreshments at the NGS open day for Moore House, our June (2023) meeting was a guided tour of Stanton Fence. The timing was perfect for the roses and herbaceous borders to be looking their best, and also the huge range of pelagoniums in the glasshouse. Head gardener Steve led us to the family 'Beauty Spot' - an untouched meadow within a sunken bowl of mature shelter belt planting. We saw marsh orchids, yellow rattle and bird's-foot trefoil amongst other wildflowers. Those who were able to stay on for an extra 15 minutes towards the end were taken to see Steve's private garden with his fantastic assortment of shade loving treasures in pots and troughs. As well as testing our botanical knowledge he delighted in testing our sense of smell with his small leaved Corsican mint.

Many thanks to everyone who was able to help with the teas at the NGS Moore House open garden. Thanks to Lucy for leading on this, we shared the monies raised equally with Whalton Church, so we are in receipt of £314.
We enjoyed a lovely Christmas social with wreath making this year with some additional friends and family members. Thank you to Anna for the fantastic baking, and Emma for the delicious mulled wine. Thank you to all who brought foliage, and to our member Jane for running the event for us. See you all in 2023!

In September we had a wonderful visit to Lilburn Tower. The owner, Mrs Davidson, was delighted to show a group around at this time of year as most garden visits take place mid-late spring when the bog garden looks its best. Some interesting specimens near the bog garden were Euonymus sachalimensis, various hydrangeas and Clerodendrum trichotomum.
Mrs Davidson was extremely generous with her time and knowledge, and kindly provided tea and biscuits in her home. |
Well done to Guy for not only organising our annual Potato Competition but indeed winning it with a magnificent 3lb 5oz! Congratulations also to Jane, second with 2lb 4oz and Di, Pat and Mike joint third with 1lb 13oz.
Many thanks to everyone who was able to help with the teas at the NGS Moore House open garden. It was a most successful well attended event .... a lot of tea was drunk and many slices of cake eaten. Thanks to Lucy for leading on this, we shared the monies raised equally with Whalton Church, so we are in receipt of £490.
For our June (2022) meeting we visited Belsay Garden. We were given a guided tour by Steven, one of the garden supervisors, and learnt about the planting, soil conditions, and micro-climate for the different areas. Steven pointed out some of the original planted specimens, and talked about new planting that will, in time, provide shelter from the winds. Our timing was perfect for seeing the flowering rhododendrons in Crag Wood.
